Seminar on Generator Protection : (7-04-08)

SEMINAR ON GENERATOR PROTECTION

A seminar to educate the students about generator protection was organized in the college on 07-04-08. It was conducted by Mr. Bhavesh Bhalja , professor from A. D Patel Institute Of Technology who specializes in power system protection. The seminar basically gave the idea regarding various generator protection techniques used currently. Various instances from the industries helped students to understand industrial applications better.

In a nutshell Mr. Bhalja talked about the following points:

  • Differential protection – used in order to protect particular (costly) equipment.
  • Reverse power flow relay
  • Cost of protective equipment should not be more than 10% of cost of equipment to be protected.
  • Voltage – relay energized in normal condition.

Current – relay not energized in normal condition.

  • Class of protection –
    • Class A – generator breaker, boiler, prime mover(phone to phone)
    • Class B – generator breaker, generator field breaker
    • Class C – generator will only detached from inf. But and after that it will again attached.
  • Relay should not operate during external fault.
  • Prime mover mechanism
  • Disturbance or fault or sudden reduction in mechanical input causing generator draw power form load.

The seminar was attended by final year electrical students . It was quite interactive and students took wholesome interest. They also gave their inputs. The seminar was a great success.
