SEMINAR ON GENERATOR PROTECTION

A seminar to educate the students about generator protection was organized in the college on 07-04-08. It was conducted by Mr. Bhavesh Bhalja , professor from A. D Patel Institute Of Technology who specializes in power system protection. The seminar basically gave the idea regarding various generator protection techniques used currently. Various instances from the industries helped students to understand industrial applications better.

In a nutshell Mr. Bhalja talked about the following points:

  • Differential protection – used in order to protect particular (costly) equipment.
  • Reverse power flow relay
  • Cost of protective equipment should not be more than 10% of cost of equipment to be protected.
  • Voltage – relay energized in normal condition.

Current – relay not energized in normal condition.

  • Class of protection –
    • Class A – generator breaker, boiler, prime mover(phone to phone)
    • Class B – generator breaker, generator field breaker
    • Class C – generator will only detached from inf. But and after that it will again attached.
  • Relay should not operate during external fault.
  • Prime mover mechanism
  • Disturbance or fault or sudden reduction in mechanical input causing generator draw power form load.

The seminar was attended by final year electrical students . It was quite interactive and students took wholesome interest. They also gave their inputs. The seminar was a great success.

CAD & 3-D Modelling Workshop : (23-04-08)

Posted in ITG Events on April 22, 2008 by itgblogger

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

This workshop aims at introducing both theoretical aspects of Computer aided design as well as knowledge needed for practicing its tools. Application of CAD/CAM in industries is growing at a fast rate in the past few years. Due to the requirement of a better quality of the product and the pressing time constraints, the need for the feasible design alternatives and its applications in the industries is required in the current era. Computer aided design; manufacturing and analysis technologies provide a valuable resource tool for the futuristic design.

The course covers most important and novel aspects of Computer Aided Design supported by an exposure to modeling tools such as Pro/Engineer. The theory sessions are followed by exhaustive practice sessions to have hands on experience on the modeling commands.

Expert Lecture on Fuzzy Logic

The seminar was conducted on 3/4/08 by Utkal Mehta on fuzzy logic in our college to discuss utility, operation and application of fuzzy logic.

A variety of topics were covered in the seminar. It was learnt that fuzzy control is not only very flexible but it is also easily upgradable and can be used to improve existing controller systems. Fuzzy logic controller creates a fuzzy set depending upon the existing conditions and the mechanism of de-fuzzification can be used to find output in real time.

Member functions of fuzzy logic were also elucidated. Students learnt that fuzzy logic is derived from the fuzzy set theory which deals with partial reasoning and does not follow Boolean algebra. In this logic everything is allowed to be a matter of degree.

Later in the seminar students were acquainted with the operation of fuzzy sets and the application of fuzzy logic. The basics of building a fuzzy controller was also illustrated.

The seminar was very interesting and detailed. It was a great success and had a positive feedback from the students.

Expert Lecture on Windows Server 2008

The CSI – Microsoft SIG Windows Server 2008 community launch was successfully organized at Charotar Institute of Technology, Education Campus Changa on 3rd April 2008.

A total of 60 Students and 4 Faculty members attended the event which spanned a variety of topics like new features and roles in WS -08, installation procedure and the virtualization support provided by WS-08.

The presentation was followed by a practical demonstration of Windows Server 2008. During the 2 hours of highly technical discussions and demonstration, the audience, a bright mix of 4th semester and 6th semester students learnt a lot of new concepts about Windows Server 2008 beta edition which was made available by Microsoft for the students to learn and experiment.

The activity was organized by the Microsoft Student Partners of Education Campus Changa – Urjit Singh Bhatia, Swapnil Mehta and Ankit Jaiswal.

This activity showcased the enthusiasm of the students of the campus who attended this event under the banner of CSI – Microsoft Special Interest Group combined with the Microsoft Student Partners Campus Club.

Expert Lecture on Robotics : (29-03-08)

Expert Lecture on Robotics

The Integrated Technical Group(ITG), Changa, conducted its first expert lecture on Basic Robotics on 29 March, 2008. The lecture was conducted by Professor Utkal Mehta who was accompanied by Harshang Vora and Anirudh Shringarpure(students of T.Y E.C).

Varieties of topics covered under this chapter were:

· What is Robotics?

· How and where to start from, to make a robot?

· Which motors are used and where can it be useful?

· What is an autonomous robot and what are its industrial requirements?

The lecture was followed by a practical demonstration of a few working models of robots, which gave the students a clear idea of the microcontroller and integrated circuits used in robots.

The lecture was organized by Arpit, inspired the students to build robots and encouraged them to participate in the various nation-wide events.

GEDA Workshop : (27-03-08)

GEDA WORKSHOP

A seminar to spread awareness about Energy Crisis was organized by the Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) on 27 March, 2008. The seminar was conducted by Mrs.Amita Pandya, Mr. G.S. Grewal and Mr. A.Shukla who hold important positions in GEDA. The seminar made the students aware of the importance of energy and basic methods of energy conservation.

The seminar was very interactive and the students took wholesome interest. Many innovative and original remedies were suggested for energy conservation during the Seminar like using CFLs instead of bulbs and tube-lights and using smaller impellers in motors etc.

The students were made aware of the basic methods of energy conservation as well as of the fact that India is lagging far behind than the other developed as well as developed countries in per capita annual energy consumption.

Some remedies suggested during the seminar were:

(1) Using CFLS, low voltage bulbs instead of tubelights wherever possible.

(2) Usind variable speed drives in engines.

(3) Making use of alternate energy sources for power generation such as tidal, solar , geo-thermal energy etc.

(4) Using smaller impellers in motors if possible

(5) Using pumps with optimum impeller speed, fluid characteristics etc

(6) Using renewable sorces of energy as fuel

The GEDA also urged us all to observe ‘black-outs’ between 8-9am to save energy.
At the end of the seminar handouts were distributed among the students providing information about the importance of energy and methods for its conservation. The Seminar was a great success.
